Frolics, fun and your chance to win a pair of tickets for the Fabulous Fifties Leeds Mencap Ball

With polka-dot dresses, blue suede shoes, magnificent music, lavish food and drinks and topped off with a stunning cabaret compere the Leeds Mencap Fabulous 50s themed ball on Saturday 13 October at Leeds Rhinos' Headingley Stadium will not disappoint!

The evening promises to be an extraordinary affair and now there really is no need to miss out as we are giving away a pair of tickets to lucky followers who would like to attend the evening.

This Ball raises much needed funds for us so we can go on to support of over 300 families with learning disabilities each week and with Danny McGuire of Leeds Rhinos fame present the evening is sure to be a winning evening!

Danny who is currently recuperating from the fantastic win against Warrington Wolves on Saturday at Old Trafford said:
“As the Ambassador of Leeds Mencap I know the fantastic work the charity delivers and I’ve seen first-hand how families grow stronger and more confident throughout their time with the charity.  I’m delighted to being part of the Ball.”

Chief organiser of the event Carola Sharpe says the ball is a great opportunity to help get the word out about Leeds Mencap and the fantastic work the charity delivers.  The evening has been planned meticulously by a strong group of volunteers who have worked tirelessly and we can promise a great evening.  In  fact, for those not lucky enough to win tickets you can still buy them online at  http://www.justgiving.com/lmball2012 or by calling 0113 2351331.

All funds raised on the evening will be directed towards the Hawthorn, which is a unique support service for families with very young children with a learning disability.  Ruth Fawcett, Head of Fundraising &PR at Leeds Mencap said
“as a small and independent charity that must raise all of its own funding, the Leeds Mencap Ball is a hugely important source of funding for us and it’s also notoriously good fun!  Much of our income comes from the local community and if it wasn’t for events like the Ball and the generosity of the local community we would really struggle to fulfill the essential work that we complete.”

To be in with a chance to win a pair of tickets for the Fabulous Fifties Ball all you need to do is email ball@leedsmencap.org.uk with the answer to the following question:
How many families does Leeds Mencap support on a weekly basis?

So you've bought your ticket, you’ve got the babysitter, dog sitter, kitten sitter, man sitter :/ ?  But now you need the dress.  THE dress.  You want to look the part; you want to walk into that ball feeling like a true belle.

Well fear not, we’ve found the shop for you.

Rose & Co. was created by Patricia and Caroline Rose when they bought an old druggists shop in Yorkshire. With a love of all things vintage, beautiful and romantic, they restored the shop to its former Victorian splendour and a quirky but charming beauty apothecary was born.

Rose & Co. products are sold in Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, House of Fraser, Heal’s, Cologne & Cotton and select independent retailers but we can find them at their Leeds or Haworth stores.

Did we mention they do pampering goodies too?  They have a full range of handmade soaps, perfumes, oils and creams.  Everything a lady would need for a fabulous 50s night at the ball.

Cash for Kids to support our ball!

It is with great pleasure that Leeds Mencap can announce that 96.3 Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash for Kids will be supporting our fabulous 50s inspired Annual Ball.

Cash for Kids aims to help as many local children in Leeds by granting out funds not just to individual children but also to other charities and organisations like ours.

Cash for Kids is the umbrella brand for Bauer Radio’s network of local charities which operate across 21 areas within the UK.

Each local Cash for Kids brand is established to channel the caring of the local community into the welfare of their own youngsters.

We deliver initiatives for sick and underprivileged children in our communities, to benefit local children and give the neediest a better and brighter future.

With cash raised and donated locally, each charity guarantees that generous donations from listeners and the community will go to bring, hope, healing or happiness to a child in your local area.

A trip to Paris, 50s ball, Pram Push, Liverpool FC and rugby stars

In these tough economic times when families are feeling the pinch and charities are facing deepening financial anguish it is remarkable that volunteers from across Leeds continue to help in any way they can.

This year alone Leeds Mencap held their annual ‘Fancy Dress Pram Push’ when Buzz Lightyear, Superman, a family of fairies, a dinosaur, a cow and Danger Mouse to name but a few turned out to raise funds.  They’ve had a very British summer garden party, with special guest Leeds Mencap ambassador Leeds Rhinos player Danny McGuire, which was a big hit despite the poor weather. Luckily the sunshine came out, the bunting went up and the BBQ was sizzling at the Olympic Torch party where they were joined by one of the Olympic Torch bearers for Richmond Hill Phil Marshall.

There is plenty more to be done, and many more fundraising events to come.

Their Annual Ball is starting to shape up well and they invite everyone to come along.  The event is to be held on Saturday 13 October at Leeds Rhinos' Headingley Stadium and will not disappoint.

Those attending the event are encouraged to dig out their dancing shoes, as they will be accompanied for the evening by the Leeds University Union Dance band for this year’s 50s theme.

The Ball attracts plenty of sponsors and donors.  Some of the highlights include; a signed football from Liverpool FC, Andrew Winterburn Director Europe & Asia for Universal World Events has kindly donated a weekend in Paris for 2 with flights from Leeds/Bradford, Simon Macbeth from Leeds Domestic cleaning has donated £5155 of cleaning prizes and Sheffield Steelers, local celebrity Billie Pearce, The Deep, Big Night Out, Diggerland, Lishi Tai Chi and Yorkshire Wild Life Park have all donated as in previous years.

But it’s the local parents that continually keep on giving.  Sandeep Assi and her whole family not only recently abseiled off a 100ft high building in Leeds they have also now donated gifts to be auctioned at the ball. Sandeep said:

“Leeds Mencap does so much to help my family and we wanted to give something back.  I encourage everyone to get involved in this great local charity.  Any help you can give will help raise much needed funds.  I hope to see you at the ball!”

Ticket prices are £55 per person or £500 for a table of 10. The price includes welcome drinks, a three-course meal and entertainment.  To purchase your ticket, visit www.justgiving.com/LMBall2012, or if you have any queries or would like to help with the event please email ball@leedsmencap.org.uk.
